§ 34-53. Functions of chief.

  • The chief of the fire department, subject to the direction and supervision of the mayor, shall be the executive officer and director of the fire department and the administration thereof, and he shall have full control, supervision and authority over all officers and employees, stations, buildings, apparatus, equipment and other property of the fire department or in the possession thereof. He shall attend such fires in the city as may demand his presence when within his power to do so. He shall exercise and perform or cause to be exercised and performed all of the duties and functions assigned to such department and any of its divisions and sections and shall carry out the provisions of laws and ordinances with respect to such duties and functions, and it shall be his duty to enforce or cause the enforcement of all laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the prevention and extinguishment of fires and fire hazards within the city and perform such other duties as are required of him by the laws of the state, the Charter and ordinances of the city, and the orders of the mayor.
